Summer at the Sanctuary – Twilight Hike
August 24 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Join us at the Sanctuary this Summer!
Few things say summer like the nighttime chorus in the fields and woodlands, but who’s actually singing? Is that a cricket or is it a katydid? Is that a frog chorus or a nighttime bird call? Come on a Twilight Hike at the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary with professional naturalist and CVHAS Educator, Henryk Teraszkiewicz, to answer all of those questions and learn about the technology that could make you a backyard naturalist! Bring a flashlight for some “night spotting”, you never know what we’ll see!
Please be sure to dress for the weather, and wear appropriate shoes for trail walking. Since we will be hiking at twilight and in low light conditions, please be prepared to take whatever precautions you may wish against ticks and/or mosquitos (long pants, pants tucked into socks, sprays, etc.). We cannot provide any means of insect repellant. Also, a water bottle is always a good idea, and we will have water available for refilling. Please bring a flashlight for all members of your party, and please do not bring any kinds of lamps, since we only want “directed” light for wildlife viewing/spotting.
We will be making use of modern Citizen Science technology in addition to good old fashioned naturalist techniques , so please feel free to bring any smart devices and preload the free iNaturalist app and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s free Merlin Bird ID app. iNaturalist will help with any and all insect, animals sign, scat, mammal, amphibian, etc. identification, while the Merlin Bird ID will allow us to play owl calls with the hope of eliciting a response!
After our hike, you are welcome to join us at the campfire for fun and Q and A, if you’d like. We may be toasting marshmallows, so if you have any dietary restrictions, please provide for yourself, as necessary/desired. You are welcome to bring a snack or picnic dinner to enjoy at the sanctuary on your own picnic blanket or one of our tables.
All children under 12 must be accompanied by a caregiver.
